WiFi Reaches 5 Billion Device Milestone

According to ABI Research, the global WiFi market reached a major milestone in 2012: More than 5 billion WiFi enabled devices have been shipped in the technology’s lifetime. Recent growth has been largely driven by the smartphone and laptop markets, but the research house says future success will depend on WiFi penetration into newer markets such as connected home and automotive devices.

ABI expects traditional markets such as smartphones, laptops, and access points to continue to grow and benefit heavily from greater speeds while other markets such as automotive, home automation, health and medical, PC peripherals, etc. will see strong growth and continue to expand the WiFi ecosystem.
